History

Baulmes is first mentioned in 652 as in loco Balmensi. In 1123 it was mentioned as Balmis.

Geography

Baulmes has an area, , of 22.5 square kilometre. Of this area, 9.02 square kilometre or 40.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while 12.4 square kilometre or 55.0% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.91 square kilometre or 4.0% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.04 km² (9.9 acre) or 0.2% is either rivers or lakes and 0.18 square kilometre or 0.8% is unproductive land.

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 0.8% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.3%. Out of the forested land, 52.1% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.9% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 19.0% is used for growing crops and 3.6% is pastures and 16.8% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is flowing water.

The municipality was part of the Orbe District until it was dissolved on 31 August 2006, and Baulmes became part of the new district of Jura-Nord Vaudois.
