Bhilai Institute of Technology - Durg
Encyclopedia
Bhilai Institute of Technology (BIT) was established in the year 1986 as the first Engineering
College in Private sector Chattisgarh. It was established in Durg
. Started at very modest scale with four undergraduate courses in Engineering (B.E.
) and intake capacity of 180 students, it has now risen to the status of an institution of repute for technical education and management studies with seven disciplines of Engineering at the undergraduate level and six post graduate courses including MBA and MCA
, and an annual intake strength of 780 in Bachelor of Engineering itself.
The Institute is managed by a Board of Trustees which is headed by Managing Trustees. The Trust comprises duly constituted Governing Body consisting of the representatives of the Trust, All India Council for Technical Education
(AICTE), the State government of Chhattisgarh
, the affiliating university, industrialists, senior bureaucrats, management experts, peoples' representatives, and notable social workers.
All Courses offered by the Institute are approved by AICTE and affiliated to Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University
(CSVTU).
BIT is an Institutional member of Indian Society for Technical Education

through various means of transportation such as mini buses, Minidors, Tempos, Auto-Rickshaws, etc.
at Bhilai in 1959 necessitated for having suitably trained and skilled personnel in good numbers to do specific technical tasks of the plant. With this viewpoint, some organizations, industrialists, charitable institutions and philanthropic societies of the region took an initiative to establish an engineering institution and therefore a trust was formed and duly registered. The Government of erstwhile Madhya Pradesh
accorded the permission to open a self supporting and self financing engineering institute and thus in July 1986, Bhilai Institute of Technology came into existence.
Seth Balkrishan was a philanthropist and a key founder member of this institution. His contribution in the field of education, sports, social upliftment and the spiritual needs of the community are legendary in Bhilai
and in the region around. This institute is therefore tributed to him.

The annual techno-management festival of BIT is called by various names. "Lamhe" in 2001, "Spandan" in 2003, "BIT Uday" in 2008 and "Urja Utsav" in 2010.
It organizes " Urja Utsav" which is the biggest technical cum management festival in India to be organized by a students club. The club has its premises in the Mechanical Block. This club has its own quizzing team, cultural team and management team. The robotics club manages the technical requirements.
09 (NIT Raipur), Axis08,09&10 (VNIT Nagpur) and Confluence10 (NIT Rourkela).
Some students of this club have won research scholarships from IIIT Hyd. Green Regiment (Urja Utsav10) conducted by this club had a participation of over 80 teams, making it the most successful robotics event in whole of Central India. It was the third event in India to get accredited by Tech4all Society, India and MetaWing (in collaboration with IIT Kgp).
There were numerous events which brought about the innovativeness and creative ideas of the students. Events were there to hone the managerial and imaginative skills of the participants.
BIT Uday was by all means a launch of the new era of technology in Chhattisgarh. Over and all it was a great techno-symposium and a salute to the creative minds.
