In April 2010, Perkins became the subject of controversy when he announced his opposition for expansion of charter and private schools, despite attending Collegiate School, a private high school, after attending public schools for middle and elementary school. Some residents of Harlem have branded him a hypocrite for opposing charter schools.
In June 2010, a draft movement was started to encourage Bill Perkins to run for the United States Senate against Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
