Coalville has formed part of the North West Leicestershire constituency
since the 1983 election.
The seat was Labour for 25 years until the Conservatives gained it in the 1970 general election
and have held it since. The seat had a coal mining
tradition that has been engulfed by the more residential town of Hinckley and its rural hinterland. The strongest Labour area is the former mining village of Earl Shilton
, but this is now easily over-shadowed by surrounding Conservative areas. It was once held for Labour by Woodrow Wyatt
, who left the party and became one of its most virulent and voluble critics in the 1980s.
