Its controversial demolition in the mid-1990s was the result of insufficient government funding to successfully run the facility. Prior to demolition, it was decided that services the Calgary General Hospital provided would be transferred into the nearby Peter Lougheed Centre

The demolition is seen as a regret by some, as the growth of the existing Calgary Hospitals has increased at a significant rate (resulting in limited beds and high costs associated with major renovations), in turn due to Calgary's population increase. In contrast it is sometimes argued that its demolition was a necessary result of the fiscal restraint of the Klein administration.

The hospital building was demolished by implosion of October 4, 1998.
