Petersen was first elected to the House in 2010. He currently serves on the Education Finance and the Education Reform committees, and is also a member of the Taxes Subcommittee for the Property and Local Tax Division. His legislative priorities include funding equity for schools that have high needs but not the revenue to match, and "value-added" teacher evaluations that measure effectiveness by students' yearly progress, not just the teacher's proficiency. He also cites the need for the state to learn to budget and make ends meet in a tougher economy, just as his constituents have had to do, calling it "kitchen table budgeting."
