, the clay oval was built in 1991, while the dragstrip opened in 1992. The facility went into receivership at the end of the 1997 season. It was purchased by Rob Reeves and ten other local racers and businessmen; it re-opened in 1998. Several of the investors have opted out since 2000 but do remain on as advertising sponsors of the facility. The track is now owned by Rob Reeves and Ron Hodgson.

The biggest event currently held at the facility is on the drag strip. The annual IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals is the sixth of twelve national IHRA events held in North America. The second largest event at Castrol Raceway is on the Oval track. The Oil City Cup features the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.
