The municipality is officially the Summer Capital of Ilocos Sur. It has a relatively cooler climate than most of lowland Ilocos Sur due to its geographical location and proximity to Mountain Province

History

On December 8, 1941, the Japanese planes and bombers was invaded and attacking the towns of Cervantes, Ilocos Sur and in 1942, Cervantes was entering the town from the occupation by the Japanese Imperial forces.

On June 14, 1945, Filipino soldiers under the military units of the 1st, 2nd, 11th, 12th and 13th Infantry Division of the Philippine Commonwealth Army, 10th Infantry Regiment of the Philippine Constabulary and the 15th, 66th & 121st Infantry Regiments of the United States Armed Forces in the Philippines - Northern Luzon or USAFIP-NL was entered and captured the towns of Cervantes, Ilocos Sur was fought against the Japanese Imperial forces since the Battle of Bessang Pass on 1945 after the end of the Japanese Occupation during World War II.
