Chathamangalam Grama Panchayath came in to existence on 24th September 1956. It has 22 wards spread over 2 villages.
The population of the Panchayath is 45,628 out of which 23,368 are women and 7,763 scheduled caste. The panchayath is widely known through the functioning of educational institutions like NIT and DOEACC

. This panchayath has greate achievements in education with 8 GLP Schools, 4 ALP Schools, 5 AUP Schools, One Govt. Higher Secondary School, One Vocational Higher Secondary School. 3 un aided English Medium Schools and 42 Anganvadis.

The villagers are blessed with presence of many health infrastructures namely, PHC Choolur and its 9 subcenters, Ayurveda Hospital Vellanoor and Govt. Homeopathic Hospital Nairkuzhi.

Residence Associations are emerging as a community organisations in every nook and corner of our state. It helps in communal harmony, neighbourhood co-operation and the allround development of members. In our panchayath also efforts are taken by several people in this direction. Palam residence association,Vengerimadom and Choyimadom Road Residence Association, Chathamangalam are the two residence associations which are active in the panchayath.

Chathamangalam Public Library and Reading Room established in 1944 and 11 libraries with recognition of Library Council and Panchayath Cultural Centre make the field very lively.

History

The legend regarding the origin of Chathamangalam can be traced back to a fight between two groups who came to see a festival at Chethukadavu. The fight ended in the death of many, the place later called as Kunnamangalam
