The station consists of an island layout
and side platform
; Platforms 1 & 2 (Island platform, platform 1 is a turnback platform) has a large weatherboard building housing an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and toilets, while platform 3 has a large weatherboard building. A large Metcard
ticket vending machine is located inside the waiting room, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A small coin-only Metcard ticket vending machine is located at the entrance to platform 3, as well as inside the waiting area.
Westfield Southland shopping centre is a short walk from the station.

is inside the station building, and was installed in 1972, and enables trains to terminate in platform 1. It was upgraded to a Premium Station on 8 March 1996.
On 10 May 2008 Australian actress and singer Jessica Jacobs
tripped and fell onto the tracks on Platform 2, and was subsequently struck by a train and died instantly from her injuries. As a result of the accident, buses replaced all trains on the Frankston Line for the rest of the day, an indefinite deferred service interruption.
Cheltenham railway station plays a key part in the Cheltenham Major Activity Centre. The station will be the subject of large future developments, including a new station forecourt, with a terraced plaza (to address the heritage listed buildings at the station) and a new taxi rank, similar to that at Mentone railway station.
