Agustín Codazzi or Codazzi, is a city and municipality of the Department of Cesar. It was founded in 1784 by the Spanish Captain Salvador Felix de Arias with the name of El Pueblito del Espiritu Santo but later renamed after the Italian cartographer, Giovanni Battista Agostino Codazzi

The municipality covers a portion of the valley between the Magdalena River
(west) and the Serrania del Perija
(east), the Casacará River (south) and the Sicarare River (north). The eastern region of the municipality of Codazzi is rugged and numerous rivers and creeks are born in the mountains of the Serrania del Perija and reaching an altitude over sea level of 3,000 m. The main rivers are the Casacara, Fernanmbuco, Magiriaimo and Sicarare. The plains on the western side of the municipality are covered by the Magdalena river and its basin.

Felix de Arias had been sent by the Governor of Santa Marta to appease the indigenous Coyaimas-Chimilas and establish good relations with these after the initial conquest attempts.
The area became part of the municipality of Los Robles La Paz
until 1935 when it was proclaimed a municipality and segregated after the lobbying of a priest named Leandro Maria de Algezàres. The territory was later restructured and Codazzi downgraded to corregimiento.
