His son Paul Hunkemöller took over the company in 1963. These days were also the establishment of the ongoing co-operation with the Bayer AG as supplier for polyurethane raw materials.
The PU-foam processing became the main operating field of the company, so that it expanded to one of the most important processing plants for PU-foam in Germany. Changed market conditions, in particular the FCKW (Chlorofluorocarbons) discussion, led 1987 to the decision to stop the PU-foam processing gradually. This was the birth of the different COELAN societies.
Under new name and with support of the sons Jochen and Peter Hunkemöller, the company focused on a diversification and extension of the product program. Liquid coating systems and special products were invented. Many of them have been successfully applied in the reconstruction
of buildings and in the industry.
Almost 50 patents and registered designs occupy the flexibility and innovation ability of COELAN.
In 1998, the formerly medium-sized private company changed into the ownership of Industrie-Beteiligungs-Gesellschaft mbH & Co. KG (IBG) Cologne

About COELAN
The invention of COETRANS-BALCONY COATING was probably the most important success for the company, as a wide range of products for the renovation of balconies and terraces result from this material. But also the COELASTIC-ROOF COATING and the COERAMIK-TILE COATING can be named as important product developments of the company. In 1992, COELAN chemical engineers adapted these building related products to the marine and boating environment. COELAN MARINE COATING has enjoyed exceptional success in Europe and become a leading brand in the marine industry. In 1997, the decorative floor coatings of LIQUID MARBLE and COEFFEKT appeared as a further innovation.Almost 50 patents and registered designs occupy the flexibility and innovation ability of COELAN.
