, Maksim Chmerkovskiy
, Cheryl Burke
, Tony Dovolani
, Mark Ballas
, Lacey Schwimmer
, Karina Smirnoff
, Anna Trebunskaya
, and Kym Johnson
— returned this season. Maksim's brother, Valentin Chmerkovskiy
, made his debut competing as a professional. Peta Murgatroyd
and Tristan MacManus
, part of Season 12's troupe of dancers, also became professional partners for the first time. Louis van Amstel
did not compete as a professional, but participated in a new segment called "Ballroom Battles", which would be canceled on November 7. The troupe also returns with 3 returning troupe members, Teddy Volynets, Kiki Nyemchek, and Oksana Dmytrenko, and 3 new members, Sasha Farber, Sharna Burgess, and Dasha Chesnokova.
This marked the first season that Karina Smirnoff was the winning professional partner. Cheryl Burke also set a new record on the show when she made it to the finale this season. This marked the fifth time that Burke had made it to the finale episode, which had not been done by any professional before.
The celebrity cast was revealed during an episode of Bachelor Pad
on August 28, 2011. The twelve professionals were revealed on August 31, 2011 during Good Morning America
. Ryan O'Neal
was planning on competing as a celebrity, but did not feel he was up to it after a recent knee surgery and so Carson Kressley
stepped in to replace him. O'Neal hopes to compete in a future season.
From the start, controversy erupted over the inclusion of Chaz Bono, the child of famous parents Sonny
and Cher
. His appearance resulted in backlash from the conservative supporters of the show, who even threatened to boycott due to his transgender
status. Despite the criticism, Bono has received strong support from the LGBT
community. It was stated in LGBT Weekly that "Bono has become the transgender community’s living symbol of hope, strength and defiance against vitriolic hate. Since ABC Television announced that Bono would appear on DWTS, he has faced vile slurs and death threats from a group of trans-phobic women and men". The controversy did lead producers to hire extra security protection for his time on the show.
Week 1: For the very first week, the couples were either dancing the Cha-Cha-Cha or the Viennese Waltz. Chynna & Tony and J.R. & Karina tied in first on the leader board with a for their viennese waltzes. Ron & Peta were sent to the bottom of the leader board with a for their Cha-Cha-Cha and were the first couple to be eliminated, with Nancy & Tristan being the last couple to be called safe.
Week 2: The second week saw the couples either dancing the Jive or Quickstep. Ricki & Derek were at the top of the leader board after they earned a for their Jive. Chaz & Lacey were at the bottom of the leader board with a total score of for their Quickstep and were in jeopardy for elimination. David & Kym were the last to be called safe, but it was Elisabetta & Val who were eliminated, despite having a 6 point improvement from the first week. This was also the second week that a new professional was eliminated from the show, leaving Tristan MacManus as the last newcomer standing.
Week 3: In the third week, the couples had the challenge of choosing a song and dance that represented the most memorable year in their life. Every couple either improved or maintained their previous week's score. Chynna & Tony scored the first 9's of the season with their Rumba, getting a total score of , but Ricki & Derek topped the leader board once again with a score of for their Rumba. Once again, Chaz & Lacey landed at the bottom of the leader board with a score of for their own Rumba. In a shocking turn of events, Hope & Maks were the last to be called safe and Kristin & Mark were eliminated, despite the fact that both couples had the third highest score on the leader board.
Week 4: The fourth week saw the couples dancing to famous movie themes. Ricki & Derek received the highest score for the third consecutive week, scoring the first 10's of the season and a total of for their Tango. While Carson & Anna landed at the bottom of the leader board and received a for their Viennese Waltz, the couple were not even in jeopardy for elimination. Rob & Cheryl were the last to be called safe, but Chynna & Tony (who were one point away from last place) were surprisingly eliminated, given that they were the original frontrunners on the leader board. This was also the third successive week that the contestant with the lowest score was not eliminated.
Week 5: In the fifth week, the couples incorporated a ballroom dance to a hit song from the 1980s
. J.R. & Karina reclaimed the top spot on the leader board after having a score of for their Samba, while Carson & Anna were sent to the bottom of the leader board again after they had a total of for their Jive. In the end, Hope & Maks were the last to be called safe for a second time, but it was Carson & Anna who were finally eliminated after back-to-back weeks of having the lowest score.
Week 6: For the sixth week, the couples danced to a song used from a famous Broadway
musical. The pairs also had their first group dance which also entailed a Broadway theme. Unlike their original performances, the celebrities were not judged for their role in the group dance. Ricki & Derek tied with J.R. & Karina for the top spot on the leader board with both couples scoring a for their Quickstep dances. At the bottom of the leader board were Chaz & Lacey, who scored only a for their Tango. Hope & Maks were the last to be called safe for the second week in a row, but it was Chaz & Lacey who were eliminated after having the lowest score for the third collective time.
Week 7: The seventh week saw the couples dancing to a routine which was based around Halloween
. The pairs were also put into two teams that would perform a group dance of either Tango or Paso Doble, meaning that all the celebrities would receive two sets of scores. Ricki & Derek not only scored the highest for their original dance of Paso Doble, but were also on the higher scoring Paso Doble team dance, topping the leader board with a total score of . Otherwise, Nancy & Tristan scored the lowest for their Jive and were also on the lower scoring Tango team, landing at the bottom of the leader board with a total score of . Despite having the lowest scores, Nancy & Tristan were the last to be called safe and were spared by the public vote over David & Kym, who were eliminated after being three points away from last place.
Week 8: For the quarterfinal week, the final five couples were faced with instant choreography. In addition to one dance they have not learned previously, the pairs would all have to perform the Jive again, but were only given twenty minutes notice before learning the actual music of their Jive. The top spot on the leader board was stolen by J.R. & Karina, who scored the first perfect scores of the season and scored the maximum . Once again, Nancy & Tristan scored the lowest in both dances and were sent to the bottom of the leader board with a total score of . In the end, Nancy & Tristan were consequently eliminated after having the lowest scores for the second week running, while Rob & Cheryl were the last to be announced semi-finalists.
Week 9: In the semifinal week, the last four couples were given three dances: A previously unlearned latin dance, the Argentine Tango, and a Cha-Cha-Cha that all the pairs would dance as a relay. In the relay, Rob & Cheryl surprisingly earned the highest amount of points, but it was Ricki & Derek who took the top spot on the leader board with a total score of after having the highest scores in both of their original dances. Hope & Maks, who landed at the bottom of the leader board after scoring a total of , became the standard semi-finalists after J.R. & Karina (who were second from last place) ended up as the last couple to be announced for the finale.
Week 10: For the finals, the three final couples had two dances for the first night: the final dance that they had not yet learned and a Freestyle dance. Rob & Cheryl took an early lead with a combined total of , while Ricki & Derek and J.R. & Karina trailed behind at the bottom of the leader board with . On the second night, they danced their favorite routines of the season. Ricki & Derek scored the highest number of points and were taken to the top of the leader board with a total score of . Despite having the highest scores, the couple ended up shockingly finishing in third place. In the final showdown, Rob & Cheryl and J.R. & Karina danced the Samba with instant choreography, having been given the music to their dance only minutes beforehand. Both couples scored a perfect , which put Rob & Cheryl ahead of J.R. & Karina on the leader board by one point. In the end, the public vote outweighed the one point deficit and it was J.R. & Karina who took home the mirror ball trophy after being declared the champions of the thirteenth season of Dancing with the Stars.

1980s
