Henderson graduated in Scots law from Aberdeen University with a 2:1 Honours Degree, and a Diploma in Legal Practice. He also studied at Palermo University, Italy, under the Erasmus scheme. He has a particular interest in public law and human rights law. His Honours dissertation focussed on the government’s power to detain and deport foreign nationals on the grounds of national security.

Before joining the BBC, he qualified as a lawyer, specialising in civil and criminal court work, presenting cases in Scotland’s sheriff courts, and instructing advocates in Scotland's supreme courts. He has a postgraduate diploma in Broadcast Journalism.

An experienced climber and hillwalker, Henderson has written forThe Great Outdoors Magazine (TGO), and co-wrote Philip's Guide to Mountains (editor, Ingalo Thomson, general editor, Doug Scott).

He is married to Professor Clare Knottenbelt, Director of the Small Animal Hospital at Glasgow University.
