The bridge is named after Senior Constable Desmond Trannore, local police officer, killed in the line of duty in 1964.
The new 482 m (1,581.4 ft) long bridge is 5 metres higher than the existing Mulgrave River Bridge, to improve flood immunity during the wet season. It is also located 30 metres upstream from the existing bridge on a better alignment of the Bruce Highway. The old Mulgrave River Bridge is regularly submerged by flood waters during the wet season.
The construction of the bridge was fast-tracked by installation of 50 precast concrete girder
