The Directory of American Philosophers is a comprehensive guide to philosophical activity in the United States and Canada. It lists edited information on university and college philosophy programs, philosophy faculty, graduate assistantships, research centers, professional societies, philosophical journals, and publishers. It was established in 1963 by Prof. Archie J. Bahm
at the University of New Mexico, and since 1970 has been published every two years by the Philosophy Documentation Center
. It is published with several indexes, a detailed list of widely-used abbreviations, and a statistical profile of each volume that provides an overview of the current state academic philosophy in North America. It is now in its 25th print edition, covering years 2010-2011. This edition lists names, addresses, and subject specialties for over 13,000 philosophers in the U.S. and Canada.
The Directory of American Philosophers is the companion volume to the International Directory of Philosophy and Philosophers
, which provides extensive information on philosophical activity in Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, and Latin America. Together they list over 28,000 philosophers world-wide. The content of both volumes has been consolidated by the Philosophy Documentation Center in a single online database known as the International Directory of Philosophy
