The International Directory of Philosophy and Philosophers is a guide to philosophical activity in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and Latin America. It lists edited information on university and college philosophy programs, research centers, professional societies, philosophical journals, and publishers. It was established in 1965 under the auspices of the International Institute of Philosophy with the aid of UNESCO
. The founding editors were Gilbert Varet (Centre de Documentation Philosophique - Université de Besançon
, France), and Paul Kurtz
(State University of New York at Buffalo, USA). The first edition was also known as the Repertoire international de la philosophie et des philosophes.
The original purpose of this directory was to serve as a guide to philosophy on a world-wide basis, and to contribute to international dialogue and communication. Since 1972 this directory has been published every two years by the Philosophy Documentation Center
. It is now in its 16th print edition, covering years 2009-2010. This edition lists names, addresses, and subject specialties for approximately 15,000 philosophers around the world.
The International Directory of Philosophy and Philosophers is the companion volume to the Directory of American Philosophers
, which provides extensive information on philosophical activity in the United States and Canada. Together these directories list over 28,000 philosophers world-wide. The content of both volumes has been consolidated by the Philosophy Documentation Center in a single online database known as the International Directory of Philosophy
