Emerin
Encyclopedia
Emerin, together with MAN1, is a LEM domain-containing integral membrane protein of the nuclear membrane in vertebrates. The function of MAN1 is not extensively known, but emerin is known to interact with nuclear lamins, barrier-to-autointegration factor
(BAF), nesprin-1α
, and a transcription repressor.
.
Moreover, recent research have found that the absence of functional emerin may decrease the infectivity of HIV-1. Thus, it is speculated that patients suffering from Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy may have immunity to or show an irregular infection pattern to HIV-1.

Barrier-to-autointegration factor
In molecular biology, barrier-to-autointegration factor is a family of essential proteins that is highly conserved in metazoan evolution, and which may act as DNA-bridging proteins...
(BAF), nesprin-1α
Nesprin
The Nesprins are a family of proteins that are found primarily in the outer nuclear membrane. Nesprin-1 and -2 bind to the actin filaments. Nesprin-3 binds to plectin, which is bound to the intermediate filaments, while nesprin-4 interacts with kinesin-1....
, and a transcription repressor.
Clinical significance
Mutations in emerin cause X-linked recessive Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophyEmery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy
Emery–Dreifuss muscular dystrophy is a condition that chiefly affects muscles used for movement and heart muscle. It is named after Alan Eglin H. Emery and Fritz E. Dreifuss.-Presentation:...

Interactions
Emerin has been shown to interactProtein-protein interaction
Protein–protein interactions occur when two or more proteins bind together, often to carry out their biological function. Many of the most important molecular processes in the cell such as DNA replication are carried out by large molecular machines that are built from a large number of protein...
