Before earning his graduate degrees, Browder served a brief stint as a sportswriter for the Atlanta Journal in 1966 and later as an investigator with the United States Civil Service Commission
from 1966 until 1968. After his time at Emory, he became a professor of political science at Jacksonville State University

from 1978 to 1987.
