Glenfield railway station, Sydney
Encyclopedia
Glenfield railway station is an important junction station serving the small Sydney suburb of Glenfield
. To the north of the station is a junction between the Main South line and the East Hills Line. To the south, a junction between the Main South and South West
lines will be constructed. The station currently has one side platform and an island platform. Platform 1 is a side turnback for terminating trains via Liverpool. It has no Easy Access. It also serves as a transport link to Hurlstone Agricultural High School, which is located adjacent to the station itself.
. The initial platform was located north of the current station, and was moved south to its current position in 1891. Originally the station consisted of two side platforms.
The role of Glenfield changed significantly with the opening of the East Hills- Glenfield extension of the East Hills line in 1987, which joins the Main South line just north of Glenfield station. The platform buildings were substantially redeveloped at this time. An additional track was opened to the west of the station in 1995 as part of the Glenfield- Ingleburn passing loop. This track is unelectrified and is usually used by freight trains. It is proposed that this track will form part of the Southern Sydney Freight Line
. In 1996, Glenfield gained an extra platform (the current platform 1) with the conversion of a side platform to an island platform associated with the Y-link works which created the Cumberland Line.
.
A new temporary ticket office has been constructed opposite the station in the Magee Lane car park. This will serve as the ticket office until the construction work at the station is completed. A temporary footbridge provides access to the station after the original eastern entrance was closed.
Stage 2 of the construction involves the South West Rail Link to Leppington, construction commenced in the second quarter of 2010. This includes a flyover just south of Glenfield to take the new line over the existing lines. Once work is complete, platforms 1 and 2 will serve the up Leppington and Macarthur respectively, whilst platforms 3 and 4 will serve the down Leppington and Macarthur respectively. This will enable cross-platform transfers for many interchanging passengers.
