go via is the new form of free-flow tolling
Open road tolling
Open road tolling or free-flow tolling is the collection of tolls on toll roads without the use of toll booths. An electronic toll collection system is usually used instead. The major advantage to ORT is that users are able to drive through the toll plaza at highway speeds without having to slow...

. The new system was introduced on 1 July 2009, and Queensland Motorways phased out the pay-on-the-spot option on 22 July 2009, meaning cash is no longer a payment option, and stopping is no longer required (or possible.) As drivers are no longer able to pay with cash, they need to choose one of the new methods of paying Queensland's toll roads. These include go viatags, go viavideo, and go viabusiness (for ongoing toll payment), or go viavideo passes (for one-off trips.)

go viatags

Electronic toll collection , an adaptation of military "identification friend or foe" technology, aims to eliminate the delay on toll roads by collecting tolls electronically. It is thus a technological implementation of a road pricing concept...

system, the same as the previous 'E Tag' system where users install a 'tag' inside their vehicle windscreen. Users then have an account online where they can manage or top up their account (if they choose that option.) They also have the choice of configuring their account to automatically top up (via a credit card payment) when the balance drops below a chosen minimum amount. Drivers that already have an E Tag can continue using them, but instead of going to the E Toll website to manage their account, they should go to the go via website instead.

go viavideo

An implementation of video tolling

, the go viavideo option is nearly the same as a go viatag, with only a few key differences. Users do not need a tag fitted to their vehicle: instead, as the pass under toll point, a photo is taken of the registration plate and matched to their go viavideo account. There is an extra "video matching" fee for this service (at 19 February 2011 this was A$0.41.)

Unlike the go viatag, uses cannot use their account on roads other the Queensland Motorways toll roads. This means other arrangements will need to be made in order to travel on toll roads in other Australian states.

Users still have an account on go via's website, and it works the same as the go viatag account. User can top up manually, or they can choose the automatic top up option ('set-and-forget', as it is known.)

go viabusiness

go viabusiness is designed for businesses. Businesses can choose to either have a go viatag account or a go viavideo account, but it will allow higher top up amounts.

go viavideo passes

go viavideo passes apply the principles of the go viavideo option, but are designed for drivers who are only planning to use the toll roads that fall under the go via system once or twice in a period of time.

Passes can be purchased online, by phone, or at a customer service center. Users can choose an amount, and when they drive through a toll point the pass will act the same a go viavideo account (including the video matching fee mentioned above.)

go viaroad passes

go viaroad passes are nearly identical to the go viavideo passes but will work on all toll roads in Queensland including the Clem Jones Tunnel and the Go Between Bridge
