The HP TouchPad is a tablet computer
which was developed and designed by Hewlett-Packard
. The HP TouchPad was launched on July 1, 2011, in the United States; July 15 in Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany; and August 15 in Australia.
Early reviews of the HP TouchPad were mixed. On August 18, 2011, less than 7 weeks after the TouchPad was launched in the United States, Hewlett-Packard announced that it would discontinue all current hardware devices running webOS. Remaining TouchPad stock received substantial price reductions.

The Touchstone has a USB power cable attached to it with a USB Standard-A plug on its end. It must be plugged into a high-power USB power adapter, such as the HP TouchPad power adapter or a newer high-current USB adapter, because HP clearly shows a warning in the user manual to not plug it into a laptop. In North America, the Touchstone ships with the same AC power adapter that is included with the Touchpad.

It has special TouchPad keys for: Power, Card View, Cursor Left/Up/Right/Down, Volume +/-, Mute, Brightness +/-, Fast Forward, Play-Pause, Rewind, Show Virtual Keyboard, Show Just Type, Show Notifications. The keyboard will pair with other Bluetooth devices but some key functions may be missing as the keyboard layout (outside the alpha numeric keys)is specific to the Touchpad.
The TouchPad (adapter and cable) and Touchstone (adapter-only) ships with this accessory.

WebOS is a "card-based" multitasking environment. Open applications can be arranged into "stacks." webOS unobtrusively notifies users of messages, emails, and calendar agenda items, appearing on the top right of the screen, rapidly reviewed by a swipe gesture. webOS 3.0 integrates Adobe Flash

Additionally, a "homebrew" package management system, called Preware, allows TouchPad owners to download hundreds of additional apps that have been written and provided by the online WebOS community. Many of these apps can be used to customize, extend, or enhance native WebOS functionality.

HP stated that it would "continue to explore options for webOS". HP CTO Shane Robison noted that the touchpad "was half a generation or a generation behind the iPad and so that wasn't going to drive volume."
On August 19, 2011, HP allowed retailers to sell all remaining stock at extremely low prices. In the USA, the price was $99 for the 16GB model and $149 for the 32GB model. Large numbers of buyers acquired the TouchPad at "fire sale
" prices. Most brick-and-mortar retailers reportedly sold out their entire inventories within hours in the morning of August 20. Online retailers, including Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Best Buy, faced massive backlash from angry customers when they offered the tablet on their sites at $99 on August 22, sold out their inventories in record time (in case of Barnes and Noble, in less than an hour), and were forced to cancel many subsequent orders.
On August 22, 2011 a fire sale similar to those in the U.S was held in Australian Harvey Norman stores. Although the event was not advertised and staff at many stores were not informed until midday, stores in several states were sold out within an hour. Similar sales also started in the UK with several stores reducing prices at 6pm to match the US (£89 for the 16GB and £115 for the 32GB). Most sold out in minutes.
Seemingly in response to the demand for the TouchPad HP announced on August 30 that it would make another production run of the TouchPad despite an announcement the week prior that production on the hardware platform was ceasing. In an effort to mend its relationship with component suppliers and channel operators, HP decided to help them clear out inventories, including touch panels, batteries and chassis, equivalent to 100,000-200,000 units of 9.7-inch TouchPads, the sources pointed out. Some of these tablets will be used to fill existing HP Small Business orders and they will be released sometime in October 2011. On October 28, HP announced they officially have depleted their inventory of all TouchPads.
The remaining Touchpads produced by HP are being sold in bundles, where a consumer can buy the 32GB version for fire sale prices if you buy a HP laptop. On November 25, 2011 the HP Touchpad re-emerged as a bundle package if you buy any HP or Compaq

Case and sleeve
The protective case doubles as a stand for watching videos or typing. There are holes on the edges of the case for access to the microUSB connector, 3.5mm connector, internal microphone. When it is folded open, there is an opening for the speaker along the "binding" edge. The case has a raised surface above the power and volume buttons, so they can easily be found. The TouchPad can charge while in the case using either the microUSB cable or Touchstone dock. On August 16, 2011, it was reported that Best Buy had only sold 25,000 of 270,000 devices that it had in its inventory and was refusing to pay HP for the rest.
