family and was born and brought up in Chennai. Harris studied at Krishnaswamy Matric School, Nungambakam. His father, S. M. Jayakumar, was a noted film guitarist and an assistant to Malayalam music director Shyam
and later became a noted musician and film composer. Jayakumar wanted him to become a great singer, but his interest was in music and he once confessed that he couldn't sing well. Harris, at the age of six began his formal musical training by learning carnatic music.
He learned music at the Chennai centre of Trinity College of Music
