Havelte was a separate municipality until 1998, when it became a part of Westerveld.

In 2001, the village of Havelte had 2770 inhabitants. The built-up area of the village was 1.1 km², and contained 1207 residences.
The statistical area "Havelte", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 3630.
