Schmid became fascinated by fencing when she was 13 years old. One year later, 14 years old, she participated in the German youth championship, where she finished third at her first attempt. She became female German champion in foil fencing in 1957, 1959, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1968.Olympic career
