The event was established in 1876, and it was initially called the Deutscher Gestüt-Preis. In its early years it was contested at Hoppegarten
over 1,200 metres, and it was extended to 1,400 metres in 1906. The race was transferred to Grunewald
in 1918, and at the same time it was cut to 1,200 metres. It was restored to 1,400 metres in 1920, and it returned to Hoppegarten in 1925.
The Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen was cancelled in 1945 and 1946, and for the following two years it was held at Gelsenkirchen
(1947) and Dortmund
(1948). It was moved to its present venue, Krefeld, in 1949.
The race was given Listed status in 2003, and it was promoted to Group 3 level in 2008. Simultaneously its distance was increased to 1,700 metres, and it was moved from September to November.
