High-speed rail in Italy currently consists of two high-speed
lines connecting all the major cities in Italy
. The first line connects Milan
to Naples
passing through Bologna
, Florence
and Rome
. The second route runs from Turin
to Venice
via Milan
, and is still under construction in some parts. The italian high-speed network is designed for a top speed of over 300 km/h (186.4 mph).
Service on the line is provided by Trenitalia
, although other companies, such as NTV
, are going to compete on the same lines since 2012.
Several projects are underway to expand the network. Plans include both more national connections (Genova
) and new international connections through France
, Austria
and Slovenia
.
