Despite not being the most successful of clubs in terms of trophy-winning, Hutnik has always been particularly active in developing young, mostly local, players; several former Hutnik players even went on to play for the Polish national team (Michał Żewłakow, the current captain of the national team, is a former Hutnik player). Hutnik has traditionally been sponsored by the nearby steel mill (Huta Warszawa) and the privatisation of the steelworks - and thus the end of sponsorship - marks the beginning of the club's steady decline. Currently the team plays in the Polish Third League (4th tier of Polish league football) and has nearly 400 youth players on its books, however, the disastrous financial condition of the club is a serious threat to its very existence.
