The Iloilo River located in the Province of Iloilo

is actually an arm of the sea for having water source from the sea. Its river mouth opens to Iloilo Strait then traverses across Iloilo City Proper, Lapuz, Lapaz, Mandurriao, Molo and Arevalo Districts. It stretches up to the town of Oton, Iloilo where it is meets up with Batiano River, which is also an arm of the sea that exits to Iloilo Strait .
Iloilo River wharf has a natural harbor which made it a preferred port of call for ships seeking protection from strong winds and tropical monsoons. It serves as port for inter island ferries and fastcrafts that travel from Iloilo City to Bacolod City in Negros Island and nearby Guimaras Island. It is also drop off point for fishing vessels that bring in their catch from the sea to be delivered to markets all over Iloilo.
The Port of Iloilo
was opened for international trade on 1855 and the coming of British Vice-consul Nicholas Loney, a year later, that led to the fast development of sugar industry in the region.
Iloio River Rehabilitation
Cleanup is being done around its river banks and river floor dredging is done to remove the silt that accumulated through the years to return it to its former natural depth. Illegal structures and Illegal fish pens were also removed from the river. Transfer of operations from the Iloilo river wharf to the international port and fishing ports is also pushed.The Iloilo River Esplanade Project planned will beautify portions of Iloilo river's banks.
