IUPUC was founded in 1970 as an extension of Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis. Originally, the extension had no single campus, instead offering classes in various locations throughout Columbus. An old airport
building was converted to the first centralized campus building for IUPUC, but was soon renovated for academic use in 1985. The Purdue
College of Technology branch program commenced at IUPUC during 1984. In 1994, the chancellor of IUPUI renamed IUPUI Columbus to IUPUC.http://www.iupuc.edu/about/history.asp
IUPUC's first vice-chancellor
, Paul Bippen, served in this capacity from 1977 until his retirement in 2003, when he was replaced by Nasser Paydar. In 2007, Dr. Jay Howard was named Interim vice-chancellor. In 2009, Dr. Marwan Wafa was name the New vice-chancellor. IUPUC's most-senior executive title is vice-chancellor; its chancellor is actually IUPUI's chancellor, because IUPUC is still managed by IUPUI.

The facility itself consists of only three buildings on a small campus. Although no student housing is provided, many students rent apartments near campus. 99% of students are Indiana
residents. The library
is located in the Columbus Learning Center, an adjacent facility that provides cooperative education opportunities to IUPUC, the local Ivy Tech State College branch, and local public schools.
The library contains multiple resources, including writing and math centers, both free to students. For example, English majors are employed and encouraged to join English Professors and Instructors in the IUPUC Writing Center, which is open nearly year round in order to assist all students, IU, PU, or nearby Ivy Tech, with any writing assignment: major paper, speech, creative fiction, research, etc. Students are also employed in the IUPUC Math Assistance Center to help students in all levels of math classes.
