Jahar Dasgupta, is senior contemporary painter from India.
in 1959 and took his primary lessons under legendary mentors like Nand Lal Bose, Ramkinkar Baiz and Benode Behari Mukherjee
. In 1964, he obtained diploma from Kala Bhaban, Santiniketan
. In 1969, he founded Painters’ Orchestra, one of the oldest (completed 41 years in 2009) artist groups in India with his other six artist friends. His first solo exhibition organized in Birla Academy. He also held solo exhibitions in Laxmana Art Gallery, Lalit Kala Academy, Chitrakoot, Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta
etc. He has held solo in abroad like Gallery Hansmania (Norway
) and Club Bangladesh (Sweden
). Jahar also get participated many group exhibitions in different places in India and abroad. His works are exhibited in-group shows like Nandan Art Gallery, Birla Academy, Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta

. At the age of six he draws a face of Stalin and became popular in his school. His elder Sister in Law who noticed the talent and gifted an imported box of colours to Jahar. He is also the main person to insist Jahar's father to enroll his name in Santiniketan

The home of Jahar was actually near a river. The other side of the river was a Tribal village. Many from the village would come to work in the Tata Steel
factories. After sunset, the fire and smoke from the chimneys, the turbulent river and the little village on the other side of the river are visually etched in his memory since childhood. The duality of this scenario – industry and advancement on this side and the village on the other side where time stood still, did not enter in his consciousness then. At the age of eight, his family left the steel city and went to live in the coalfields of Dhanbad
district, in a place called Digwari.
. Shantiniketan was like an oasis with abundant greenery and an ambiance of culture. The influences of changing faces of nature have had a reflection in Jahar's paintings.

and Dharmanarayan Dasgupta in Kala Bhavan.
