Jane LRT (TTC)
Encyclopedia
The Jane LRT was a proposed light rail
line in Toronto
, Ontario
, Canada
. It was part of the Transit City
proposal announced March 16, 2007, to be operated by the Toronto Transit Commission
. It was expected to cost approximately $630 million, with construction to begin in 2013 and opening in 2017. It was planned as the sixth of the seven Transit City lines to be complete after the Sheppard East LRT, Finch West LRT, Waterfront West LRT, Eglinton Crosstown LRT, and Don Mills LRT lines.
The Jane LRT was never formally approved by Toronto City Council. With the election of Rob Ford
as Mayor of Toronto, it is unlikely to be approved during his administration.
on the Yonge-University-Spadina subway in North York. The alignment from Steeles West Station to Jane Street will be determined from three possible options: From Steeles West Station, meeting Jane Street via Steeles Avenue, via Shoreham Drive through Murray Ross Parkway, or through Northwest Gate.
on the Bloor Danforth subway in Old Toronto. However, from Wilson Avenue south to Jane Station, many options still remain due to the narrow ROW available on Jane Street. Of the current options, tunneling the line would limit the number of stops along the line and dramatically increase costs, while maintaining traffic flow along Jane Street. As of April 2009, the TTC has a study underway determining feasible alternatives for LRT Lines running along narrow ROW's, which will determine better alternatives that may be applied to the Jane LRT south of Wilson Avenue.
. This extension takes the Jane LRT from the Toronto/York Region border north to Highway 7 in Vaughan
via Jane Street, overlapping the Spadina subway extension to Vaughan Corporate Centre
. It is highly likely that the LRT would then be extended further north to Major Mackenzie Drive, such that it would meet a potential BRT/LRT corridor along Major Mackenzie Drive, as Metrolinx has identified one to be needed within its 25-year plan. Also, Jane Street north of Highway 7 is within the vicinities of Vaughan Mills
and Canada's Wonderland.
