At the beginning of the British rule Jhenidah was a police out post and was turned into a thana in 1793. The Jhenidah subdivision was established in 1862 and was turned into a district in 1984. It consists of six upazilas, five municipalities, 67 union parishads, 945 mouzas, 1152 villages, 27 wards and 134 mahallas.

Historical events

bara bazar (ancient name Gangadighi) of Kaliganj upazila had been a famous port of India. It has been mentioned in the Greek history that in the ancient time Prabal and muslin used to be exported from this port. In the 1860s indigo resistance movement spread all over this district. During the War of Liberation in 1971 battles were fought between Pak army and the freedom fighters at Mandartala (Kaliganj), Dulalmundia and Besaykhali (Jhenaidah Sadar) in which several members of the Pak army were killed and so were many freedom fighters. Jhenaidah was liberated on 6 December 1971.

Gorar Mosque, Jorbangla Mosque, Galakata Mosque, Joradaha Gambuj Mosque, (Harinakunda), Shahi Mosque, Moheshpur Jame Mosque and Kaliganj Jami Mosque are famous mosques. Jhenidah Cadet College (JCC),Jhenaidah

Jhenidah Cadet College (JCC) is a boarding school, located in the outskirts of Jhenaidah, Bangladesh.

It is one of twelve cadet colleges of Bangladesh. JCC is an education institute and famous for outstanding result in countrywide Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) board examination. Jhenaidah Government High School

Jhenaidah Government High School is one of the oldest schools in the district Jhenaidah. Jhenaidah Govt. High School was founded in 1877. It is the oldest and one of the most famous educational institutions in Jhenaidah. The first school functioned as a high school English on the campus of Government Girls High School. Soon, the school has been recognized as an English High School and was registered under the University of Calcutta, after which he became known as Jhenaidah Model High School. In 1961, when a new building was built for the school in a new place to house students. Then the school was moved to its present campus on land donated by wealthy people, especially Fazar Ali Dafadar and Mobarak Mondal.

In the period 1947–1963 Jhenaidah Model High School was under Dhaka Board. The school was placed under Rajshahi Board in 1963 and since 1964, is under Jessore Board.

The advancing Mukti Bahini column finally captured the Dhalai Border Outpost due in large part to his efforts. He was posthumously awarded the Bir Sreshtho, the highest recognition of bravery of Bangladesh.

, and was the eldest son of his family. During the Partition of India in 1947, his paternal properties fell in India. They crossed over the border and settled in the bordering area of Khorda Khalishpur of Jhenaidah district.

He joined East Bengal Regiment on 2 February 1971 and participated in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. During the war he made a significant contribution in capturing the Dhalai Border Outpost at Srimangal.

He was buried in Tripura in India. On 27 October 2007, advisers of the Bangladeshi caretaker government decided to bring back his remains to Bangladesh and bury him besides Bir Shrestho Matiur Rahman. It is said[by whom?] that the last place he stood alive was about 20 feet away from the Pakistani bunker, either in a canal or where the memorial is (near the bunker). [2] 10 December 2007 the remains of Hamidur Rahman were bought back to Bangladesh and on 11 December 2007 he was buried again at Buddhijibi Koborsthan (Cemetery), Dhaka.

BirProtik Shirajul Islam: Shirajul Islam was a Lance Naik in the Bangladesh Army during the 1971 Liberation War. Shirajul Islam was born on Saganna village under Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila. He joined Army on 9 August'1969.

Places To See

Kaligonj Upazilla:
  • Naldanga Temple Complex:, in the Kaliganj Upazilla, is a temple complex built in 1656 by Maharaj Indranarayan Debroy. There are a total six temples now. The government restored all of them in 1980s but it was destroyed again during the riot. Now most of the temples are in ruins. Renovations are still going on. The idol of goddess Kali was came from Banaras, India. Buses to Kaliganj are easily available from Jessore. Naldanga can be reached by rickshaw from Kaliganj.

  • Kolika Doha is another remarkable place situated in Naldanga, 300 miter distance from Naldanga Temple Complex.

  • The biggest banyan tree in the world: is situated in kaligonj Upazilla of this district. A person can go there by rickshaw or other human hauler from Kaliganj main bus stand.

  • Baro Bazar: Gazi kalur chompa botir Mazar, Gora Mosjid (Mosque), Sako bazar mosjid and more than 10 other mosjid (mosque)and more than 5 big dighi are situated in Baro Bazar of Kaligonj Upazilla.

  • Bulu Deouan er Mazar is another remarkable place in Kaligonj Upazill.

  • The Gunjanath temple dates back at 17th century is also in Kaliganj. It can be reached from Naldanga.
