Jordan national football team
Encyclopedia
The Jordan national football team (المنتخب الأردني لكرة القدم) (known by its fans as النشامى Al-Nashama) is the national team of Jordan
and is controlled by the Jordan Football Association
. They have never qualified for the World Cup finals, but have appeared twice in the finals of the Asian Cup
, once in 2004
and again in 2011, both times reaching the quarter-final stage.
Jordan is a two-time winner of the Pan Arab Games
, having won the 1997
and 1999
editions of the tournament. Following victories over Hong Kong
and a Romanian Football League XI, they were eliminated by a Japanese University team. Jordan was the host country of the WAFF 2010
but was eliminated from the first round after drawing both their group stage matches with Syria and Kuwait, thus failing to progress to the semi-finals. So far, Jordan has hosted the WAFF Championships 3 times and the Arab Cup once.
Under Egyptian head coach Mahmoud El-Gohary
, who took over in 2002, they qualified for their first Asian Cup in 2004
. El-Gohary resigned from his position of being coach of Jordan after 2007. The Portuguese Nelo Vingada took over but failed to help Jordan reach the Asian Cup of 2007 and the FIFA World Cup of 2010. He then resigned in 2009. Then the Iraqi Adnan Hamad took his place as head coach for Jordan after he was kicked out for not helping his nation Iraq to reach the FIFA World Cup of 2010. The highest FIFA ranking Jordan has ever reached was 37th in August 2004. It is noted that some of the players of Jordan are of Palestinian origin; those that came from, or first played in, or have been playing in Al-Wahdat or Al-Baqa'a SC, which are two football clubs in Jordan formed by Palestinian refugee camps.
where the team defeated Syria 3-1. The first FIFA World Cup
Qualifiers Jordan took part in was the 1986 qualifiers
, but they are yet to qualify for a World Cup.
Jordan qualified for the Asian Cup finals for the first time in 2004, losing to Japan
in the quarter-finals in a penalty shoot-out in the end. Jordan missed out on the Asian Cup in 2007 but barely returned for the subsequent 2011 edition in Qatar after beating Singapore 2–1 at home to resolve a three-way tie for second place on the last day of qualifying
.
), how he improved Jordan's national team and made preparations for 2010 and 2011, and how Jordan feels about being placed in Group B of the 2011 Asian Cup, along with Asian champions, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. Adnan Hamad first answered, "Well, to start off with, I have been coaching Jordan since 2009. My staff, the previous head coach of Jordan, and I had picked up some young players of Jordan who had participated in the 2007 U-20 World Cup, basically almost the whole squad; and also kept some of the oldest players of Jordan who had participated in the 2004 Asian Cup, and those who make great performances in the Jordan national league". He said he had prepared Jordan with many Friendly matches from 2009–2011 and the WAFF 2010
, which he said was the first stage of their plan for preparations; and with some training sessions. He said he was not particularly worried about the result of Jordan only drawing both their group-stage matches with Syria and Kuwait and failing to progress to the semifinals. He said, "I was using that tournament to work on team tactics and to get the players to raise their own standards" Hamad said, "Our place in the 2011 Asian Cup will be a tough and challenging one for us. But if we start well, I believe we can make it past the group-stage. Our players are confident, and we have a great team spirit". But coach Hamad also believes that Jordan can play a lot better at their home stadiums, seeing how the players are pretty much used to playing at their stadiums and receiving much support from their fans. Some of the oldest players of Jordan who have participated in the 2004 Asian Cup have all been interviewed for their experiences back in 2004 and in their qualification for the Asian Cups.
