Jurong Region Line
Encyclopedia
Jurong Region Line was an expected LRT line to be built in Singapore
. It would have served residents in Jurong
who live beyond the end point of the existing East West Line.
Plans for this line have been put on hold indefinitely after LTA announces no new LRT lines unless a new township is heavily built-up, probably to avoid another Sengkang / Punggol West LRT station where some of them are not opened to date 2010 as the surroundings was mainly plain fields..
However, in 2011, under the published 'NTU masterplan 2011', the western section of the proposed line was re-proposed(with changes that slightly different from the original proposal by the LTA) as a private light-rail serving NTU, that would run from Pioneer MRT Station
and into the campus, via Pioneer Road North and planned to be built by 2021.
Based on current passenger demand in the area, LTA do not have any immediate plans to implement another RTS connection to serve Jurong. LTA will continue to monitor the growth in travel demand in Jurong area and review our transport plans accordingly.
This includes the Jurong Industrial areas, Jurong East and West residential estates and Nanyang Technological University.
Due to the land constraint in the area, this system would most likely be modeled after monorail systems such as the Sentosa Express
, KL Monorail and Jurong Bird Park Panorail, with bridge-like structures constructed and used as stations(eg. a station created from combining 2 bridges; with faregates below and the platform above it).
The line was also expected to link to Nanyang Technological University
and Boon Lay MRT Station
.
Though this line has been shelved, parts of it is currently being revived under the 2011 NTU masterplan, as an internal light rail system proposed to serve the Nanyang Technological University
by 2021, which would make it the 5th privately-owned train system in Singapore
(after Sentosa Express
[2006], Jurong Bird Park Panorail[1991], Changi Airport Skytrain
[1990] and Sentosa Monorail
[1982]), if built.
