state. It became one of the seven districts of Haryana state at the time of its inception on 1 November 1966. Later Kurukshetra district
was separated from it on 23 January 1973, Kaithal district
was separated from it on 1 November 1989. Panipat district
was merged with it on 24 July 1991 but again separated from this district on 1 January 1992.

The Karnal Countryside (District) was Occupied by the Sikhs under the Leadership of Sardar Baghel Singh (1730–1802) of Krora Singha Misl, in the 1780s. The Area of Karnal fell in to the hands of the Maratha Hindu Empire in the year 1785 after The Sikh Sardars Ruled this area until the early 1800s when the District was Taken by the British East India Company.
During the British Rule Karnal District also had powerful Sikh Sardars (Chiefs) Sardar Shamsher Singh Sidhu of Arnauli, Sardar Sheo Narayan Singh of Shahabad, Sardar Ujal Singh Uppal of Dhanaura, Sardar Kishan Singh of Tangaur, Sardar Bahadur Sardar Jawala Singh of Jharauli, Sardar Gurdit Singh Dhillon of Shamgarh, Sardar Tirlok Singh of Sikri.
The Karnal District also Had Muslim Sardars (Chiefs) such as Nawab Azmat Ali Khan Mandal, Nawab Ibrahim Ali Khan of Kunjpura.
The District of Karnal had a significant population of Muslims but overall it had majority Hindu and some sikh villages before the 1947 Partition took place and was awarded to East Punjab which remained part of India.

The district is a part of the Indus-Ganges plain and has a well-spread network of western Yamuna canals. Its geographical area has been divided into three agroclimatic regions: Khadar, Bangar
and Nardak

road one mile away from Karnal covering the area between the Yamuna river and National Highway 1 up to Patti-Kalyana village. Bangar area starts from west of Khadar area covering Gharaunda development block. The Nardak area lies in Nissing, Nilokheri and Assandh development block. However, its water is saline and not fit for irrigation.
