Kathleen M. "Kathy" Bernier (born April 29, 1956) is the State Representative for the 68th Wisconsin State Assembly
district. She defeated incumbent Democrat
Kristen Dexter
in the November 2nd general election
. She previously served as the Chippewa County Clerk
from 1998 to 2011.
Bernier serves on the Committee on Aging and Long-Term Care, Vice Chair of the Committee on Election and Campaign Reform, and the Committee on Tourism, Recreation and State Properties.
Representative Bernier voted in support of the controversial Budget Repair Bill
in 2011, which requires state employees to contribute 5.8% of their salaries to cover pension costs, contribute 12.6% towards their health care premiums, and weakens collective bargaining
privileges for most public employee union members. Democrats and union leaders offered to accept the increased cost of benefits but not the removal of bargaining rights. Republicans rejected the idea.
