a 1957 Graduate is responsible for designing the school's mascot - The Hornet. In 1956, Art Teacher Pete Tortora asked a talented 11th grader by the name of Herb Trimpe to design the new Lakeland Mascot; a hornet. Earlier that year, the student body voted that the Hornet would be their mascot. Herb designed the very first hornet, the one still used today. Herb Trimpe (LHS 1957) has worked for Marvel Comics for over 30 years and is the artist responsible for the entire Incredible Hulk series, Iron Man, Wolverine and many other famous comic characters.
