, Lakewood has received over 35 million USD to construct a new school building. Construction began in January 2006, and continued until the summer of 2007. The new building had its official opening over the summer of 2007, with students sometimes assisting teachers move into the new building post term-end. The new building was open for use by the student body and faculty starting at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year. The new building features a large atrium with three large, indoor potted trees.

The Bengal Regiment has ranked within the top ten bands in Colorado class 5A competition since entering that division in 2005, including a fifth place showing in 2008. In January 2006 the orchestra was invited to perform at the Colorado Music Educators’ Association (CMEA) annual conference, and again in 2011, with the symphonic orchestra.
The Winter Percussion Ensemble competes in the RMPA circuit in the Percussion Scholastic Open class.
In November 2011, Barrage
will come to play with the orchestra for 2 days.
The girls basketball team was League Champions and advanced to the State finals in the 2007-2008 season. Other recent titles include admirable standings for the softball and girls cross-country teams, which reached the State Championships in 2006. The softball team won 2 consecutive 4A state championships in 1997 and 1998. Also, the Lakewood Boys Soccer Team placed second in Jeffco 5A to Chatfield in the Fall of 2007. They went 7-2-1 in their Conference and 9-4-4 overall. Previous records for the boys soccer team include:

In 2009, the Lakewood Freshman Football Team went 10-0 and crushed Columbine, a team that went in as a 10-0 favorite, 56-19.
Also in 2009, the Boys Swim and Dive Team won first place at League, making them the first League Champion team in the history of LHS. They also won league in 2010 and 2011.
In the 2010 Fall season, the Lakewood Boy's tennis team won second place in League, with Scott Strachan as 1 singles and Ze-Hong Ong as 2 singles winning first team all conference. They also won second place at regionals and 1 singles, 2 singles, 3 singles, 2 doubles, and 4 doubles all went to the CHSAA 5A State Tennis Tournament.

Choral department
In addition to the Lakewood instrumental program, Lakewood High School has a total of five choirs (three auditioned, two unauditioned). The two unauditioned choirs are the Y-Chromophones, a men's ensemble, and Women's Voices, a women's ensemble. The three auditioned choirs, Eclipse, a jazz ensemble group consisting of 12 female voices, Encore, a mixed ensemble group, and Kaleidoscope, a female ensemble group, have been recognized as "The Top Choirs in Colorado". In January 2010, Encore had the honor of attending the Colorado Music Educators Association (CMEA)convention. Encore also attended a statewide choral competition in Grand Junction, CO in April 2010, taking 1st place in the mixed choir category. In previous years, Kaleidoscope has also attended the CMEA conference, most recently in 2011. The Lakewood Choral department has shown significant growth over the last few years, despite budget cuts.Athletics
In the fall of 2006, Lakewood's football team reached the quarterfinals, and the 2007 girls golf team won the Jefferson County League.
