List of American Ryder Cup golfers
Encyclopedia
This is a list of all the American
golf
ers who have played in the Ryder Cup
through 2010
. The four players who have done so most often are Billy Casper
, Raymond Floyd
, Lanny Wadkins
and Phil Mickelson
with eight appearances each. This compares with Nick Faldo
's European record of eleven appearances. While Faldo is a serious candidate for the status of Europe's greatest ever golfer, none of the four American co-record holders are candidates for the position of America's greatest golfer. The lower American record, and the names of the men that share it, generally reflects the fact that before the Ryder Cup became competitive in the 1980s, the leading Americans did not always play. Of the four golfers with seven appearances, only Sam Snead
is a serious candidate for the honor of America's greatest golfer. Unlike many top Americans before the 1980s, Snead was a regular participant in the Ryder Cup; his seven appearances spanned eight editions of the event. He had a different reason for not having more appearances—World War II
. The war caused the cancellation of four Ryder Cups, all during his playing prime.
^ In the final team but did not play in any matches.
+ Selected or qualified for the team but withdrew and was replaced. Tom Watson left the day before play began to be at the birth of his first child and was replaced by Mark Hayes
.
W = Matches won, L = Matches lost, H = Matches halved
In this table the appearances includes players who were in the final team but were not selected for any matches. It does not include those who were initially selected or who qualified but were later replaced. Thus Tom Watson (1979) is excluded.
