A One Day International (ODI) is an international cricket
match between two teams, each having ODI status, as determined by the International Cricket Council
. The women's variant of the game is similar to the men's version, with minor modifications to umpiring and pitch requirements. The first women's ODI was played in 1973, between England and Australia. The Indian women's team played their first ODI match in 1978, against England, after the Women's Cricket Association of India was formed. The Women's Cricket Association of India was merged with the Board of Control for Cricket in India
in 2006 as part of the International Cricket Council
's initiative to develop women's cricket.
The Indian team is selected by a panel of former cricketers who have played at least 25 games at the first-class
level or higher. The panel consists of five retired women cricketers, the chairperson and four other members, one member from each of the five zonal divisions in domestic cricket. More than 20% of India's women cricketers represent Mumbai
(formerly Bombay) in the domestic league. India have played 173 ODIs under 12 captains, starting with their first ODI in 1978 and including their most recent one in March 2009. The team first won an ODI in McLean Park
, Napier, New Zealand
against the International XI Women, their seventh game, played in 1982. Since then, India have won another 89 games. The team's first series win was against New Zealand, in 1995.
