List of countries by public debt
Encyclopedia
This is a list of countries by public debt
to GDP ratio as listed by Eurostat
for EU and by CIA's World Factbook 2010, for the rest of the world. It is the cumulative total of all government borrowings
less repayments that are denominated in a country's home currency. Public debt is the most relevant data for discussions of government default and debt ceilings; although of similar magnitude for the US (2010), it is different from external debt
, which instead reflects the foreign currency liabilities of both the private and public sector. The figures here are represented as a percentage of annual gross domestic product
. The public debt relative information provided by national sources is not always objective and true, given the fact that there is no independent research in these matters.
Does not include the state debt issued by individual US states and intra-government debt (with amounts owed to the Medicare
and Social Security
funds being the largest portion of "intra-government" debt)
"Figures are for gross general government debt, as opposed to net federal debt; gross general government debt includes both intra-government debt and the debt of public entities at the sub-national level" . "As a share of GDP,
net debt was 38.1 percent" .
According to the greek public debt new profile decided in the european leaders (with the participation of banks and IMF's representatives) summit in Brussels the 26th of October 2011. Following this decision the greek bonds being held by private creditors have to be reduced by 50% in its nominal value. Thus the total public debt is reduced by 27,5% from 160% of GDP in 2011 to 116 (excluding the loans owed to International Financial Institutions and the bonds maturing after 2020)
