In 1961, route 83 was extended from Ealing Broadway to London Airport Central (now Heathrow Airport Central
) via the 65
and the former 91 (now H91
). The London Airport Central to Ealing Broadway section was discontinued in 1964.
In 1965 it was extended to Brentford
replacing the former 255; this section was withdrawn in 1968 and replaced by the new E1
. In 1980s it was rerouted to the full length of the Uxbridge Road to the new Ealing Hospital. It also swapped with the 183 in the Hendon area running via Hendon Central tube station
instead of via The Bell.
Route 83 has always been operated at First London's Alperton garage using double deckers like Routemaster

s bought by First for the route in 1999 were among the last non-low-floor buses bought for use in London. The 83 is now operated with low-floor Volvo B7TLs. Up to their closure, Hendon and Hanwell garages also provided buses for this route.
The Contract has been retained by First Centrewest with 28 new Volvo B9TL
/ Wright Eclipse Gemini 2's double deckers. The Sunday daytime service was increased to every 10 minutes, with the daily evening service increased to every 12 minutes from 12 September 2009.
