The nickname is based on Álvaro Gonçalves Coutinho, nicknamed O Magriço, a 14th century Portuguese knight, who, together with 11 colleagues, travelled to England to take in a tournament to defend the honour of twelve English ladies who couldn't find knights in England willing to do so. The story is famously told by Luís de Camões
in Os Lusíadas
