His career as an educator began in 1877. He worked as principal at Thirunelveli, a bilingual English-Tamil school and later played a key role in the school's development. Pillai later joined as aPhilosophy

H.H. The Maharaja’s College
and completed his M.A.
in 1880. During that period he became acquainted with Professor
Robert Harvey.
