Maya Belenkaya was born in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg
) and lived there throughout her whole life. She survived the Siege of Leningrad
and was awarded the "Defense of Leningrad
" medal. She started skating at the age of 12 in the Pioneers Palace
. At first she was coached by A. Zhdanov. Belenkaya was two-time USSR national champion (1952, 1953), three-time silver medalist (1950, 1955, 1956) and bronze national medalist.
She coached numerous singles and pairs skaters to national titles, most notably Alexei Mishin
