Named after Hugh McRoberts, an early settler and founder of Lulu Island (Richmond), this secondary school (grades 8 - 12 in British Columbia) is one of the two schools in Richmond that offer the French Immersion Secondary School program (the other being McMath). Hugh McRoberts Secondary School opened on November 30, 1962 and was converted into a full-fledged secondary school in the mid-1990s, with the first class of the new grade 8 - 12 program graduating in 1997. The high school was partially renovated in 1999.

The school logo and mascot is a "Striker", which is depicted as a mounted knight carrying a lance or a claymore. The logo had previously been a shamrock

, but was reportedly changed because it was felt that this did not adequately convey the competitive nature of the school's athletic clubs.

The school offers various sports teams which students can join include basketball, volleyball, rugby, soccer, field hockey, track, badminton, ultimate frisbee, tennis, table tennis and golf. Other clubs include Reach For The Top (a trivia club), Math Club, Comic Club, Global Leadership Club, Physics & Engineering Club, and Art Club. McRoberts also has a struggling Theatre and Music department due to funding cuts by administration over recent years.

Sports and Athletics

McRoberts is a school known for its strong athletic program. Most notably rugby and volleyball.

The Senior Girls volleyball team of 2010 won in the Richmond district and proceeded to finish 4th at AAAA provincial championships. As of the 2009 season, the Senior Girls volleyball team is heading to the Provincial Tournament after a first place win at the Vancouver and Districts playoffs. In the 2008 season, The Senior Boys soccer team returned from the Provincial Tournament gaining fourteenth place. Then senior girls field hockey team is third in Richmond. The Junior, Juvenile girls volleyball are ranked in the top two in Richmond. In the 2007 season, The Senior Girls soccer team placed 1st in the AAA Provincials.

In 2007, the senior girls rugby team placed 3rd in AAA in the Provincial Tournament, and in 2008, the team placed 1st in AA in the Provincials.

In addition to athletics, McRoberts also has a strong Reach For the Top team, coming top 3 in BC in the past 5 years 4 times, and going to the provincials every year since 2002. The team recently concluded the season as the Richmond champions and placed 10th in the entire province at the end of the annual tournament.
