The name was derived from mezzo (means middle or in between) and corona (means crown, related to nearby castle), Mezzolombardo (mezzo-lombardo) was part of the area but split into two in 1194. Another explaination was mezzo came from local dialect, which mez means wet. In the old name Mezzotedesco, tedesco means German, while lombardo refer to Lombardy
