nomination for the Massachusetts State Senate
seat representing the Middlesex-Essex District, which includes the cities and towns of Lynnfield, Malden, Melrose (Wards 1-5), Stoneham, Reading and Wakefield. Day initially announced his intention to seek the seat in 2009 and appeared to be the only candidate who would challenge the long-time incumbent and State Senate Minority Leader, Richard Tisei (R-Lynnfield). In November, however, Tisei announced that he would vacate the seat and campaign for the position of Lieutenant Governor as a member of the Republican ticket headed by Charlie Baker
. By January, two other candidates had emerged in the race: Katherine Clark
, a Democratic State Representative from Melrose, and Craig Spadafora, a City Councilor from Malden. Clark eventually defeated Day in the primary, and went on to win the general election.
