Abdurahman was elected to Fort Saskatchewan Town Council in October 1977. Abdurahman was elected Mayor of Fort Saskatchewan in October 1980 and reelected in October 1983, and was the first Mayor of the City of Fort Saskatchewan following Fort Saskatchewan's incorporation as a city in 1985. Abdurahman resigned midway through her second term as mayor in order to contest the 1986 Alberta general election
